Count full strips. Respect the repeat.

Wallpaper calculator

Plan vertical wallpaper strips from your wall measurements and actual roll size. This conservative estimate supports free/random and straight matches, with a clear allowance for trimming and pattern alignment.

Measure walls and your roll.

YOUR MEASUREMENTS

Walls to paper

Enter every wall separately, including doors and windows. The tallest entered wall height is used for every strip; no offcuts or partial widths are reused. Include any extra width needed at corners. Up to 30 walls.

Use the width that can actually cover the wall, excluding any required overlap or trimmed edges.
Use the actual length you receive for the price entered, including when a shop sells a “double roll.”
This is the combined allowance, not the allowance at each end.
Drop, offset, paired-roll designs and murals are not supported.
For straight match, enter the full repeat on the label. One full repeat is reserved at the start of every roll for alignment.
Optional contingency beyond the calculated rolls. Enter a whole number from 0 to 100.
Optional. Use the price for the exact roll length above; leave blank to omit cost.

Inputs stay in this page. Unit changes convert measurements without converting prices. “Currency units” means the same currency you used for the entered price.

A conservative cutting estimate for one product. Every strip uses the maximum wall height. Windows, doors and offcuts do not reduce the count. Paste, tools, labor, tax and delivery are excluded.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure each wall’s width and maximum height. Keep openings included and add any required corner-width allowance yourself.
  2. Enter the actual purchased roll dimensions, usable width and combined top-and-bottom trimming allowance.
  3. Choose free/random or straight match. For straight match, enter the vertical repeat from the label. Check unsupported designs with the supplier.
  4. Calculate and review strips per roll before buying. Add extra spare rolls if wanted. Unit changes convert measurements, never your currency or price.

A strip must fit on the roll.

Each wall needs its width divided by the usable roll width, rounded up separately. All strips use the tallest wall plus your total trim allowance. Free-match paper uses that cut length directly.

For straight match, the cut length rounds up to a whole pattern repeat. This tool also reserves one full repeat at the beginning of every roll, then counts only complete strips in the remaining length. That deliberately conservative reserve allows for roll-start pattern alignment; it may overestimate a cutting plan checked by an installer.

Try the worked example.

The default exampleA 4 m wide wall needs 8 strips from a 53 cm wide roll. A 2.4 m height plus 10 cm total trim is 2.5 m. A 64 cm straight repeat rounds the cut to 2.56 m. Reserving 0.64 m from a 10.05 m roll leaves 9.41 m, enough for 3 full strips. Round 8 ÷ 3 up to 3 rolls. At 25 currency units per roll, cost is 75. With free match, 4 strips fit per roll and the same wall needs 2 rolls.

Limits worth checking before you buy.

Why not subtract windows and doors or use total wall area?

A short area above a window does not necessarily replace a full-height strip, and patterned offcuts may not match elsewhere. This calculator leaves openings included, rounds strips per wall and does not reuse partial widths. A supplier can refine the estimate from a detailed cutting layout.

Does this support half-drop, offset patterns or murals?

No. Those designs may require alternating drops, separate roll sequences, panel alignment or other product-specific planning. Do not select straight match as a substitute. Check the label and ask your supplier for a cutting plan. Order matching batches and verify the purchased roll dimensions.

Sources and assumptions

Graham & Brown’s wallpaper FAQ explains free, straight and offset matching, pattern repeats and batch numbers. The strip-count method and full-repeat startup reserve shown here are this calculator’s explicit conservative assumptions; the manufacturer’s own product instructions take priority.
