Measure the surface. Plan the boxes.

Tile and backsplash calculator

Plan one tile product for a floor, wall, or backsplash. Add rectangular surfaces, allow for cuts, and turn the coverage on your chosen box into a whole-box order.

Measure your tiled surfaces.

YOUR MEASUREMENTS

Surfaces to tile

Enter separate rectangles without overlaps. Width can be the height of a wall or backsplash. Up to 30 surfaces.

Optional untiled openings

Deduct only measured areas that will stay untiled. Small outlets and awkward cutouts often still consume tiles; leaving them included is more conservative. Check that openings belong within your measured surfaces.

The example 10% is not a universal recommendation. Adjust for cuts, pattern, breakage and repair stock.
Use the coverage printed on this exact product’s box.
Whole pieces per box, if listed. This only reports purchased pieces; it does not plan individual cuts.
Optional. Enter your actual box price; leave blank to omit cost.

Inputs stay in this page. Unit changes convert measurements without converting prices. “Currency units” means the same currency you used for the entered price.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure each rectangle that will receive the same tile. Use separate plans for different products or box sizes.
  2. Add only openings you intentionally want to deduct, then enter an allowance suited to the layout and manufacturer’s guidance.
  3. Enter the box coverage, optional pieces per box, and optional box price. Calculate the estimate and check the whole-box total.
  4. Changing metric/US units converts measurements and box coverage. It does not change your currency or price. Reset example restores the starting measurements.

Area, allowance, then whole boxes.

Add the rectangular areas, subtract the entered openings, and add your waste percentage. Divide by the stated coverage per box and round upward. The extra coverage from rounding is separate from the chosen waste allowance.

The calculator uses unrounded inputs for that final decision. Displayed areas are rounded for reading, so do not divide the displayed numbers to reproduce a boundary case.

Try the worked example.

The default exampleA 4 m × 3 m surface is 12 m². With 10% waste, allow 13.2 m². At 1.5 m² per box, buy 9 boxes covering 13.5 m². At 30 currency units per box, material cost is 270. If that product contains 10 pieces per box, those boxes contain 90 pieces.

Limits worth checking before you buy.

Does this calculate the number of individual tiles to cut?

No. Box coverage drives the purchase count. The optional piece count only multiplies whole boxes by the pieces printed on the box. Nominal tile dimensions, grout joints, mosaic sheets, borders and mixed-size patterns need a separate layout.

Should I deduct every opening?

Not necessarily. A small cutout may still use a whole tile, and the calculator cannot locate or validate openings on your layout. Only deduct deliberate, measured untiled areas. Check cuts, corners, spares and matching shade or batch with your installer or supplier.

Fireclay Tile’s measurement and overage example separates areas into rectangles. Marazzi’s tile FAQ explains shade and caliber markings. Product guidance and a real layout determine your allowance; this tool does not recommend installation methods.
